It Is Rare You Catch Them

I received a message 5:05pm. It is the emergency dispatcher. The report reads: "Several unmarked vans on the street, apparently surrounding a pick up truck."

The vagueness concerned me. The caller who is witnessing ICE has only just called the emergency hotline the last moments before transport rolls out with those detained (that is what I sensed of it). I gun for it. I thought this was it, time is racing and fleeing. ETA is 15 minutes according to Google Maps, I arrive in 10. I am so worried what I am going to pull up to. I become confused. There is nothing. No vans nor a pick up truck at location.

I drive around the block inconspicuously and cautiously - be ethical and be responsible; in case I am only about to encounter the individual detained and have to confront with ICE. I see nothing. I am still trying to understand what is going on. As far as I knew I was the only one on site and I need to phone the dispatcher to confirm the situation. I call... the phone rings as I worry that I was 10 minutes too late. I inform dispatcher what I am seeing and what I am not seeing. Both the dispatcher and I feel that the worst has happened but we are hoping for a miracle - we needed a miracle.

Turning around I see two vecindarios which I had no idea were there before me. I pull up and I am relieved to see Hunter and Blake. For a moment's time I am at ease but then the worst outcome to happen happens. Hunter tells me la migra raided and snatched a family. ICE has kidnapped a family. They left the moment they got there and drove off in two transport vehicles. All confidence, all assurance that I would be able to confront evil and crush it faded. I call the dispatcher and hand the phone to Hunter - he repeats the horror which he told me. Phone hangs up and Hunter and Blake tell me that they will handle it from here. They are still comforting the family or friend who saw it happened.

I do not know what to do. I am numb. I was 10 minutes too late. If I was there sooner maybe...

Still the horror that 4 or 5 disappear and many will never know about this unless it is told. I am writing this to keep my sanity. To let my readers know this is what is happening because it needs to be known the human rights violations ICE is doing to my hometown. I am dismayed at what happened today and I might fucking lose it.

A compañero told me this:

"They move quick. They are in and out... it is rare you catch them."

Is this what fate has it? That it is a rarity that good conquers evil?
